From a young age, my family attended church regularly. I can still envision bright red cushioned wooden pews and the smell of a Potluck Sunday off in the distance. As a 6th grader, I made the most significant decision of my life: to make Jesus Lord.
As we speak with people who have experienced miracles, it’s easy to consider my story insignificant. But, when I remember John 5:24, I’m reminded that even a conversion story as simple as mine is a miracle. After all, it takes a miracle to move from death to life. To think any different is a disservice to the sacrifice Jesus made.
To compare and minimize the work of God in our lives is to steal the joy of our salvation and the faith that we need for tomorrow.
In other words, if you follow Christ, you already have an Only God Story. And our stories don’t stop there! Our lives are all filled with Only God Stories. He doesn’t leave us where He found us. God continuously takes us further into glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Think about your life for a moment. What Only God Stories do you have? Write those down. You can see more about that in our blog post here.
Maybe the idea of an Only God Story is new to some of us. It may be hard to decide if the stories that come to mind are worth documenting. If that’s the case, let’s set a foundation with three truths to help us uncover our stories and what to do with them.
- God created everything.
Colossians 1:16 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
He created the natural and the supernatural. He created us.
- God holds everything together.
Colossians 1:17 “He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together.”
He holds the very cells in our bodies together and provides the air we breathe.
- God blesses those that follow Him and those that do not.
Matthew 5:45 “. . . For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”
We don’t control who or how God chooses to bless.
What is an Only God Story?
An Only God Story is a story that is only possible because of God.
I love a good, simple definition.
Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
As followers of Christ, God will work all things for our good. Everything! Our lives are filled with Only God stories because God works all things for the good of those who love Him. The simplest of stories are only possible because of God, which makes them grandiose.
The God of the universe chose to be involved in the intricate details of our lives. Moments that seem small are still Only God Stories worth sharing.
Here are two applications for us today:
- Look for Only God Stories.
Recently our family bought a new to us white car. It is a whole new world for my kids, but not for the reasons you may think. They are astonished at how many other white cars there are! The same is true when we begin to look for Only God Stories. The more we look, the more we see. - Share your Only God Stories.
Scripture teaches that we defeat the enemy by the blood of the lamb and the words of our testimony. We share Only God stories to give glory to God and remind us how God’s grace and mercy follow us all the days of our lives.
I have come to find that the more I look for and share the only God Stories in my own life, it builds my faith and the faith of those around me. If you want to share one of your Only God Stories, we would love to hear it! Submit your story here.
